Riding the Waves of Entrepreneurship

Happy Tuesday Confident Lady!

Back in the fall I asked you guys to submit some topics you’d like me to teach on. This one was a theme that came up for several of you -----> Whether you are in your first or tenth year of business you know exactly what I’m talking about. You could wake up one morning feeling down in the dumps about how your business is {NOT} going, to onboarding a new client + celebrating, to having a long term client decide not to re-sign your monthly retainer, and being back in the dumps! These are what I call “the waves of entrepreneurship”.

We all know that if you don’t get support around your mindset, these waves can look like tsunamis and maybe even cause you to end up quitting your life long dream. This is where I come in--I help my clients get to a place where the waves become an expected part of business. Today I am going to give you a few tips to get you get headed into a better mindset when the waves approach. Rather than pushing against them, I will teach you a few simple steps to help you hop on your surfboard and start riding them! Ok, let’s dive in!

  1. ALWAYS first ask yourself, is this FEAR or EXCITEMENT? I’ve talked about this in the past. Fear and excitement feel exactly the same within. You know those jittery butterflies in your stomach, racing heart, sweaty palms, dry mouth, dizziness, etc.? Thought so! When you are excited, you experience these physiological symptoms and when you’re scared you experience them as well! I would have to guess 85% of the time, it’s excitement you are experiencing. You are just so excited to start working with your new client and sharing all the knowledge you have to give to them, not fearing this new client. I know personally when I ask myself in situations if it’s fear or excitement, 99% of the time it’s excitement. Imagine how much easier life could be if we just realized how excited we are about certain things?

  2. WELCOME the waves. What do young kids do their first time at the beach when they see the big wave coming toward them? They usually run AWAY from it and we all know what happens when you run from the saves --> get swept under, flipped around and spit back out in the sand. Ugh not fun. I don’t know about you, but this felt SCARY as a kid--until I learned to face my fear, run toward it and ride the wave. When we ride the wave what usually happens? We get pulled into the next wave with ease, to the next, until before we know it we are in the middle of the ocean! This is how I feel today. I have NO idea how I got here. And I’m saying this as a good thing! Because I didn’t run from the fears and kept diving in over and over, I’m now in a place I NEVER would have imagined being in. This is the power of RIDING THE WAVES. When you resist it hurts, it holds you back, it’s frustrating. When you dive in, you flow, you move, you keep on going with ease.

  3. CELEBRATE all the big AND little wins because ultimately they are leading you to even more big and little wins. Stop and smell the roses ladies!! Celebrate each day your business is OPEN. If it’s open, you’ve decided not to give up. Those little wins and humble beginnings are what is preparing you to step into those BIGGER CEO roles. Each day, week, or month document your wins. And make sure you continually review past wins to see how far you’ve come.

  4. Welcome the LULLS. I know this doesn’t sound fun and it isn’t always fun, but I know it works. When things are slowing down. When the crickets are chirping. When you aren’t signing on new customers the way that you used to. Take this as a time to step back and go within. When you PUSH and RESIST, you never end up getting to ease. When you lean back and let things FLOW, ease is born. With every business that I’ve owned, there has always been a month or two that things seemed quieter than normal. Sales have been down. My phone not ringing as much. I NEVER take this as a disappointment, I take it as a blessing and permission to work IN my business. To step away, get creative, plan all that goodness I never have time to plan for. This is where all my greatest programs have been created. All my favorite content and blog posts. The creative part has always come from a dry season. What would happen if I resisted and kept pushing? None of this creativity would have happened. I would have had the same outcome, low sales, but been left frustrated. So PLEASE today, if you are in a dry season, WELCOME it. Work on the things that you WON’T have time for when business starts picking back up!  Your future self will thank you for taking the time to cultivate it during this quiet time.

Please hear me out today ladies. No matter WHO you are, you will ALWAYS experience the waves. Those people you admire and look up to...I’m sure their waves are even bigger than yours at times. Commit and take control of your mindset today. It’s how you react what’s going on around you that determines your outcome.
